Effects of Art Therapy Group Counseling using Cartoons and Animations on Anxiety and Depression of High School Students

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of art therapy group counselling programs using cartoons and animations on high school students with depression and anxiety. The participants of program are 30 high school students, 15 in the test group who participated in the art therapy group counseling using cartoons and animaions and 15 in the control group. For the pre and post test, Beck Anxiety Inventory(BAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) were applied. Repeated Measure ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. For a qualitative analysis procedure, an analysis of participants¡¯ verbal reactions and content analysis of the cartoons and animations using an author biographical analysis method were used. The level of anxiety and depression of the experimental group was significantly lower. Emotions related to anxiety and depression, expressions regarding the perception of personal identity and social relationships are changed from negative to positive. The results of this study are important because of providing data and information about the positive effects of art therapy group counseling using cartoons and animation towards emotional stability, and showing that it can be deemed as a type of expressive art therapy.
